We pulled into the
Sleep Inn hotel around 2:30pm today, and after changing rooms 3
times due to unpleasant smells (we recommend against staying at
the Sleep Inn in Port Wentworth, GA) we headed into historic
Savannah to walk around the city and try to scrounge up some
southern cuisine. Back in September of 2003 on our trip to
Beaufort, SC, we spent a day walking around Savannah, and we
didn't really see anything new this time around, but it's such a
beautiful, quaint, and historic city in which to stroll around
that we enjoyed it all the same. Very relaxing, not too
many tourists, not too much action, but we love it in this part
of the country (especially Caroline). Stopped off for an
oyster happy hour down by the river, had 2 dozen raw and an
order of fresh steamed shrimp. Never had fresh steamed
shrimp before - very good! Then we walked down the
touristy river walk, and stopped in for more oysters and some
dinner (hush puppies for Caroline, of course) before heading
home (the hotel, that is). We even got to sit outside for
dinner, seeing how the weather was so cooperative this evening.
There's a cold front moving in though, and we'll see lows in the
upper twenties all the way down to St. Augustine, Florida as we
continue on our journey. |
