With the work we came
to do around the condo almost finished, we decided to take a "vacation day" (having a
plumber in your only bathroom for a day and a half and then
cleaning up after him can be a
little stressful...) and go for a little boat ride to see some
whales. At the marina docks, we boarded a small cabin
cruiser-style boat with just four other people, a couple about
our age from the Denver area (although we were guessing
downriver, MI, for those of you familiar with Michigan
geography) and the woman's parents, who we repeatedly heard,
have a villa here in PV that they bought after selling
their yacht. They smoked and drank the whole trip,
with the older woman using her binoculars obsessively and
periodically yelling out things like "one o'clock, one o'clock!"
in her bird-poop stained white outfit.
Company aside, the weather was gorgeous, the water was calm
and everyone in the small boat had a great spot for viewing the
dozens of whales we saw. (Sorry, Chad and Dawn, this trip
blew our previous whale-I mean-dolphin-watching trip away and we
didn't have to wear coats and scarves either, but we had a good
time reminiscing and laughing about that day!) We saw lots
of whales (ok, mostly whale backs and tails) and for our grand
finale, right before we headed back in, we saw a whale that did
a full breach for us, jumping out of the water and twisting and
turning, like you see on the pages of National Geographic!
It was quite spectacular and a wonderful end to the trip. |
