Caroline and Scott Take on the Tour de Gouda

05/06/06 - Gouda, The Netherlands (Gouda photo album)

Caroline and Scott strike out on their own to enjoy a little of the unofficial Dutch national passtime...bicycling

After lunching on croquettes at Leonne's favorite local croquette restaurant, we spent yesterday relaxing at Daniel and Leonne's (our home exchange house, for those of you not following along religiously), counting roof-cats (9!) and enjoying dinner and a glass of wine on their lovely (and addictive!) balcony.  Today we took their bicycles out for a spin.  We had to do a bit of adjusting to the seats, since Leonne and Daniel are both about 6'2", but miraculously, Caroline was just able to reach the pedals on Leonne's bike and, although we were still a bit saddle-sore from Thursday's ride, we had a lot of fun cycling along the small country lanes and bike paths to and from the cute town of Oudewater (fun-etickly, "Ow-duh-wah-duh").  The weather was beautiful (again) and there were lots of other cyclists out.  We stopped in Oudewater for herring and ice cream cones (not at the same time) and witnessed a wedding procession, complete with marching band! on their way to the fancy reception right in the middle of Market Square!  The cycling was easy (no accidents, mis-adventures or hills!) and the scenery was idyllic, with lots of cute Dutch houses, winding canals, lush, green meadows, adorable lambs and even a windmill or two.  However, after our 30 km or so ride, we were left wondering where all the tulips are!

Tomorrow morning, we leave to spend a few days in Germany and a day in Belgium.  We are packing light and taking a vacation from the computer, so you won't be hearing from us for the next few days, but we'll be sure to catch you up when we get back to Gouda on Thursday!

(By the way D&L, we were downstairs and all of a sudden saw "Roof Cat" (gray & white) standing there looking at us!!  He managed to sneak in the patio door upstairs when we weren't there to supervise... We were able to herd him out easily though, and we'll be sure to close the patio door when we're not upstairs, to make sure he doesn't return and empty out the kitchen cupboards.)
