After a delightful and delicious final stop in Milan, we
bid Europe farewell and arrived in Michigan without incident on
Wednesday evening. A fantastic trip, no doubt about it,
but after almost 3 months of travel, Caroline sure is happy to
be back in the land of English speakers and toilet seats.
And in the middle of taking care of some post-travel business
affairs, we have even already managed our first Coney Island
dining experience...aaahhhh, life is good. Stay tuned,
as we posts lots of photos and prepare for our trip to the East
coast later this month... |

After turning in our Fiat Panda rental (which we'd grown to love
after a month of her faithful service), we managed our way to
the apartment in spite of a public transit strike that happened
to be underway upon our arrival. We had to spring for a
private water taxi ride across Venice ($80!), which turned out
to be one of our Venitian highlights and a worthy splurge.
We originally hadn't planned to go to Venice. While
checking into home exchanges in Tuscany and Umbria, we received
a response from a woman who owned a place in Venice in addition
to Umbria, and offered it up as part of the deal. Although
the home exchange eventually fell through, we ended up renting
her apartment in a very 'locals only' neighborhood on the east
side of the island in the Castello district. The apartment
was perfect, overlooking a small canal in a quiet but easily
accessible part of town.
Venice was easier to like than we had expected. If you
can stay away from the annoying pigeons being fed by the even
more annoying tourists in Piazza San Marco (not hard to do),
it's a great city in which to wander aimlessly. Even when
we were trying to take a specific route, we ended up wandering
aimlessly - it's very easy to get lost on those tiny winding
streets. We spent the vast majority of our time being lost
in Venice and riding the vaporetto boats up and down the
Grand Canal. Of course (as usual), we managed to set aside
several hours each day for eating, and eat we did. Some of
the best food that we've had in Italy! But Scott's Dad has
told him on many occasions that Milan has the "best food in the
world", so we head there next for our last meals in Europe
before flying back to Michigan on Wednesday.
